Rules, Procedures
and Classroom Management
We use a traffic light to monitor behaviors within the classroom. At the beginning of every day, students start with their clothing pin on a name chart. If a problem arises and a student is asked to fix it, but does not and the behavior continues, the student will be placed on the green light. If the behavior continues, that warrants a move to another color. Green is 5 minutes off of recess, yellow is 10 minutes off of recess and red is the whole recess, parent notification and/or principal involvement, depending on the situation. Moving between colors is also dependent on the situation; if a problem is serious, students may skip all of these and could be sent directly to the principal.
I generally have ONE rule to cover all of the school rules students have learned: if it is a problem or becomes a problem, I will ask the student to fix it. If he or she is unable to fix it, I will find a way to assist. I use the traffic light as a way to monitor and remind students of their behaviors.
